The bullying of academics follows a pattern of horrendous, Orwellian elimination rituals, often hidden from the public. Early intervention is vital. The longer it takes the dirtier their methods become.
Indeed, earlier intervention is critical for many good reasons, including protecting the employer from their own mistakes.
